The Long Winter is the tenth mission of the Story campaign, in Chapter 2, The Age of Ash, and the campaign's first mission on the Snowy Forest map. It is a calm mission: months have passed, the town has grown, and you expand and repair it at your own pace.
Overview
- There are no scripted attacks, and Corvane's army is held back from your units and buildings.
- You start with a large town, a standing army with three Fire Mages, and a well-stocked bank.
- Everything can be built and trained.
Story
Story text not final.
The story moves on to winter. The town has grown in the months since the battle: walls, more houses, more villagers, a bigger army and a fuller stockpile. For the first time in a long while, things look good. In all those months there has been no sign of the Pillars, and people around the town have begun to wonder whether the King somehow got his way and the stones are his now.
That night, a Pillar rises in the centre of the town, among the Captain's own houses rather than on a battlefield or in enemy ground. The Captain spends the night at the stone, inspecting it and learning what can be learned. It stays dormant; nothing is unleashed. By dawn the Captain is determined to find a way to harness its power and bring down the King.
With Hale gone, the Captain now speaks in their own voice.
Objectives
- Look over the town. Select a building or a unit near the hall.
- Expand and repair. Three objectives, in any order:
- Repair every damaged building: two Houses, the Farmers Camp and a stretch of wall. A marker follows the next damaged building.
- Build three more Houses, nine in all.
- Train five more Spearmen, eleven in all.
- Nightfall. A checkpoint is saved. The screen fades to night, and the Pillar rises near the hall.
- Go to the Pillar. Select units and move them beside it.
- Keep watch. A checkpoint is saved. Watch over the Pillar until dawn. The step completes after about two and a half minutes.
- Dawn. The screen fades to morning, and the Captain's plan is made. The mission ends a few seconds later.
Characters met
- The Captain, speaking in their own voice.
- The lead scholar, in the current text.
- The townsfolk, overheard talking about the stones, the King, and Hale.
Notes
- The Pillar in this mission is dormant and is studied, not charged.
- The town's layout is fixed by the mission, as in every story mission; it does not depend on what you built before.
- What comes next: the campaign continues after this mission. Later missions are still being written.
