Dawn of Embers has six resources: Wood, Stone, Gold, Food, Leather and Fibre. Four are gathered directly. Leather and Fibre are byproducts: they come in automatically alongside certain kinds of Food.

Gathered resources are not added to your stockpile when they are cut or picked. A Villager carries a load back to a building that accepts it, and the load counts only when it is dropped off there. See Gathering for how this works.

In a skirmish every player starts with 1,000 of each resource.[1]

Summary

Resource Gathered from Dropped off at Main uses
Wood Trees Woodcutters Camp, Town Hall Almost every building, ships, siege engines, Trade Carts, reseeding Farm Plots
Stone Stone deposits Mining Camp, Town Hall Stone walls and gates, towers, the Town Hall, the Stronghold
Gold Gold deposits; panning at a Sifting Station Mining Camp, Sifting Station, Town Hall Military units, advanced buildings; the currency of the Market
Food Berry bushes, Farm Plots, hunted animals, fish Berries and farms: Farmers Camp, Gatherers Camp, Town Hall. Game: Hunters Camp, Town Hall. Fish: Fishing Docks Villagers and most military units
Leather Byproduct of hunted animals Banked with the Food load Archers (Shortbowman, Longbowman, Crossbowman, Cavalry Archer)
Fibre Byproduct of berry bushes and Farm Plots Banked with the Food load Mages (Fire, Water, Earth, Lightning)

Wood

Wood comes from trees. A villager ordered onto a standing tree first chops it while it stands, then fells it and keeps working the fallen trunk. A tree holds 500 wood. A felled tree that is used up disappears.

Wood is dropped off at a Woodcutters Camp or the Town Hall.

Uses: Wood pays for nearly every building, all ships, all siege engines, the Trade Cart, the Spearman, and the reseeding of empty Farm Plots (80 Wood each time).

Stone

Stone comes from stone deposits placed around the map. Stone is dropped off at a Mining Camp or the Town Hall.

Uses: the Town Hall (100), stone walls and stone gates, the Archers Keep and Cannon Tower (125 each), the Wizards Training Grounds (50), the Stronghold (600), the Trebuchet (50) and the Warden (80).

Gold

Gold comes from gold deposits. It can also be panned from the water beside a Sifting Station: panning never runs out, but it is much slower than mining a deposit (see Panning for gold).

Gold is dropped off at a Mining Camp, a Sifting Station or the Town Hall.

Uses: most military units, the Siege Workshop, Military Docks, Trading Hub, Cannon Tower, Wizards Training Grounds and Stronghold. Gold is also the currency of the Market: every other resource is bought and sold for Gold.

Food

Food has four sources. All of them fill the same Food stockpile.

  • Berry bushes ("Berries" in the game). Dropped off at a Farmers Camp, Gatherers Camp or Town Hall. Each unit of Food also yields 0.5 Fibre.
  • Farm Plots, built beside a Farmers Camp. A field holds 400 Food and is reseeded for Wood when it is empty. Each unit of Food also yields 0.2 Fibre.
  • Hunted animals ("Game"). A villager must kill the animal first; the carcass is then gathered. Dropped off at a Hunters Camp or the Town Hall. Animals also yield Leather.
  • Fish, caught by fishing ships and delivered to the Fishing Docks. See Naval.

Uses: villagers (50 each) and most infantry, cavalry and mages. No building costs Food.

Leather

Leather is a byproduct of hunting. There is no Leather deposit and no separate Leather job: when a villager gathers a carcass, Leather is collected along with the Food and banked when the load is dropped off. How much Leather an animal gives depends on the species (see Hunting).

Uses: archers: Shortbowman (20), Longbowman (30), Crossbowman (25) and Cavalry Archer (20).

Fibre

Fibre is a byproduct of gathering Food that grows: berry bushes and farm fields. There is no Fibre node, no Fibre gathering job and no Fibre tool. Every load of berries or farm Food brings Fibre home with it automatically.

Source Fibre per unit of Food Fibre in a full load of 100 Food
Berry bush 0.5 50
Farm field 0.2 20
Hunted animal none none
Fish none none

Fibre is counted as a fraction while the villager carries the load, and the total is rounded to a whole number when the load is dropped off. A load that is lost or abandoned loses its Fibre too.

Uses: every mage costs 40 Fibre (Fire Mage, Water Mage, Earth Mage, Lightning Mage).

Trading resources

Wood, Stone, Food, Leather and Fibre can be bought and sold for Gold at the Market. Prices depend on the map's biome.
